SLOWING DOWN

The Mountaineer
(Der Bergsteiger)

The jagged rocky summit rises majestically above the impressive mountain range. The finish is in sight. Just a few more metres to climb and he has conquered it, the highest mountain in the region. Feared by all. But not by him.

The sun burns relentlessly on the angular rock face and on his naked upper body. He grimaces with exertion and pulls himself up to the small ledge below the summit. The sound of breaking rock penetrates his body, as if from afar. Full concentration. One false step can be the difference between life and death.

But the desire to overcome the last few metres is stronger than the fear of the abyss. He has done it. Breathe in. Breathe out. Alive. He stretches his arms out. Closes his eyes. Feels the wind on his skin. This is freedom…
